How many version of one character can there be?

There may be up to 3 versions of any one character in game. However, each version of any one player's character must be distinctly different from any other player's version of the same character. For example; a young Anakin Skywalker, a Darth Vader, and a female!Anakin Skywalker would all be acceptable participants, whereas Harry Potter taken from the timeline of Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter from the Prisoner of Azkaban timeline, and a Harry Potter from The Goblet of Fire would not be enough of a difference.

We also allow CRAU characters (meaning characters who were played in a previous setting to retain their memories/acquired skills/etc.) If you have specific questions regarding CRAU's, please feel free to contact us!

What if my character has special powers/magical abilities?

All powers will be dulled down, since they could have variable and uncontrollable effects on the Capitol and its authorities. Your character has no control over this. The Capitol does. You're welcome.

Powers will work ONLY within the confines of the Arena. Within the Arena there are three way powers can be accessed:
    1) Some Arenas will have locations and times when powers will be unlocked, per that specific Arena's design. Your character is free to attempt to figure out when and where those places and times are at their own discretion.
    2) Some arena's will have a "hidden prize" situation where, if you play the game "correctly", you'll be rewarded with access to your character's powers, per this discretion of the Gamemakers.

Will there be any mechanism by which unpowered characters can acquire some shiny mind-powers, or will they have to survive on wits (and swords) alone?

Right now there is not any plans for this, however, depending on the arena this might change.

Privacy? What privacy?
    • Nothing said or done within the Arena is private. Any and all characters in the game, have access to this information. Most especially citizens within the Capitol.
    • Nothing said on the network or around the city is private from the Capitol unless it is:
    1) Encrypted (In code)
    2) Face to face, in private; though remember there are hidden cameras everywhere, so you might want to go outside/some place loud. Just in case. In public you will not be overheard as long as you use some common sense. The Speakeasy is the only location thoroughly free of surveillance.
    3) Through handwritten letters

How does the communication devices/network work? Are they like Gale's?

Your character will get a device to the new network the Capitol has set up so that the whole Capitol can keep up with this very exciting never ending Quell. It is not the same device as Gale's, but much more like the Holo device, generally worn on the wrist. It creates and displays 3-D video posts (Your character can, of course, point the camera at the ground, cover it with their thumb, or whatever they like, however the Capitol could trace the line.) If they do not speak, they can write notes and hold them up.

Anyone caught hacking or otherwise tampering with their device will be punished by the Capitol. This doesn't mean you can't do it, but please discuss it with a mod. Your character would need to be pretty tech savvy.

Tributes will always be stripped of their devices before entering the arena.

So can posts be filtered? Can we make "anonymous" posts IC?

Yes, posts can be filtered. But the Capitol can access anything that is not a hand delivered note on paper, and "accidental network malfunctions" may occasionally happen, so be careful what you say and to whom.

As for "anonymous" posts, the only way to do as such would be the old fashion (and highly dangerous) method of physically printing them off and pining them around town.

How does money work?

The money in the Capitol is As, or Assi.We made that up, you didn't forget anything This is a different system from Credits, which are OOC and rewarded for AC. YOU gets Credits, your character gets As. Your character is given a credit card, but is not able to check the limit on it. In addition they are given 100 Assi every time they kill someone in the arena.

One As is equal to about $5

But what if my character dies outside of the arena?

In-game death is only reversible if your character dies inside the Arena. If your character dies wandering around the Capitol, unless the Capitol has a very strong reason to bring them back, your character is dead. Permanently. If you kill your character in the Capitol and come to us afterwards to try to work it out, they will still be dead.

Here is some more information about the OOC workings of it.

Will my character know they are going to come back?

In their first game, possibly not unless they are told before hand by another character. After the first round, of course, new Tributes could be told by people who aren't so new to the game.

Holy cow this is a lot to read! Do I need to read it all? Speaking of which, do I need to read The Hunger Games to play here?

You do not need to read the Hunger Games to play here, but we seriously recommend it. It'll help set you in the world, and they're awesome, quick read.

You do, however, need to read all of our posts. We know it's a lot. However, when we decided to create this game, we knew things would be way more fun if we could recreate a lot of the feelings that the Hunger Games creates in the books, while still making the setting RP friendly. We didn't want to overly plan out deaths, removing all suspense and a lot of what made the books interesting. (Spontaneous slaughter always keeps people on their toes, after all.) We also wanted to create, in and out of character, a feel of competition and advertising yourself as much as possible. And last, we wanted to keep it plot heavy, and not dissolve into a slice-of-life feeling game, which requires a lot more guidance.

So, we know it's a lot. But hopefully it's worth it.

Which community is for what? Where is what information?

    COMMUNITIES:
[community profile] thegames: This is the network community. The network is NOT available to any character while they are inside the Arena. **You will note however, that this game is very heavily log-based, so it is very much our least active area.
[community profile] thecapitol: This is the log community for any events outside the Arena, including training.
[community profile] thearena: This the log community where the Hunger Game events actually take place; only tributes post to this area.
[community profile] thegamesooc: Your typical OOC community. It will include new Arena Posts, Activity Checks, Player Plotting Posts, How's My Driving Posts, the weekly death announcements/state of the game, as well as intros, drops, hiatuses, etc.
[community profile] thecircus: Meme and crack community. The test drive memes, as well as fanart, friending memes, and any other players submitted memes.

    IMPORTANT LINKS:

This post has links to all game relevant posts, and what is found in those posts.

In addition, if you forget something, never be worried to ask us. We know it's complicated, we don't begrudge you being lost.

Wait how do these games actually work?!

If you follow this link, we've laid out how the game works, both in and out of character!

So what if my character refuses to play?

If your character refuses to play along, the Capitol will make them. They've done this for 75 years now, and your character is far from the first person to refuse to play.

This can include manipulation of the Arena to corner your character into participating; psychological manipulation; the torturing of your character and their loved-ones both in and out of the Arena; and really, whatever the hell they want to do that they think will get you to play.

The Games are the Capitol's form of entertainment, and there is nothing entertaining about watching your character hide in the bushes for 5 weeks, but it is entertaining to watch them try to dodge erratic, super-charged lightning bolts... Just keep that in mind.

What happens if I die right at the Cornucopia? Is the game over for me?

When your character dies, at the Cornucopia or later in the Arena, they are collected, put back together, then released into the Capitol. They are out of the Game for that cycle, but there will be plenty for them to do on the Capitol side of things, including training, parties, interviews, underground rebellions, and anything else they can find!

They are going to be under pretty strict surveillance, but even that is not perfect. The Capitol is used to many things with the Hunger Games, but keeping track of more than 24 tributes for more than a week a year is not one of them.

What happens when my character dies in the Arena?

First, a cannon goes off. This happens after remote confirmation of death, so your character won't hear it! Probably good for them. Then, in nearly all Arenas, a hovercraft scoops up your body and anything you may have been carrying. If anyone in the Arena wanted that cool ax you had, they have just a few seconds to get it before it's gone. Your scavenging-from-dead-bodies options are very limited. But you miss all that too, because you're dead.

The next thing you know is that you're waking up in a clinical room on an underground floor of the Training Center. You're healthy, uninjured, and not even hungry. In fact, it's almost like your body is brand new. Not even bruised! Once you've gotten your wits about you, they release you back into the Training Center and you get to go about your business in the Capitol. Until next time.

So they come back all repaired up?

Your character wakes up in the exact same condition they originally arrived in. Any damage from the arena, including lost limbs, it set back. For those character with lingering illnesses, they have stepped back a few months. They are restarted from square one.

Can a character compete in the Games more than once? If so, do I have to re-app the character?

Yes. Your character will compete in ALL the Games, sans the occasional themed Game if they happen to not meet the themes requirements, until they are dropped, or in-character move away from the Games. You do not need to re-app them.

What is the IC and OOC pace?

Basically it's 1:1. This game is prose heavy, and as such there's a lot of wiggle room in terms of backdating/forward dating as needed. Time between the arena and the Capitol also sometimes is a little wobbly, so do what works best for your thread and the players involved. We are not going to nitpick it.

What other jobs are there in the Capitol?

This is a decadent future city, but it is still a city and needs to run.

The only career choice truly blocked is Gamemaker. You can apply for stylists, prep team, politician, store owners, craftsmen, restaurant owners...anything needed to run a city.

Most truly unsavory jobs have been taken on by Avoxes, people who have been deemed somehow criminal by the Capitol and had their tongues removed. If you are applying for an Avox, you will be a servant if you're lucky, and might end up in the sewers, or other unpleasant position if you're not.

If you're unsure if a career choice works for your character or the setting, you can always drop the mods a line!

Can Capitol Citizens "bid" on the tributes?

Well. Yes. Yes they can. Due to the sensitive nature of this issues, it is NOT something the mods will be forcing on characters, however, character are more than welcome to arrange this amongst themselves (With the assumption the Capitol forced them into it).

For those wondering what "bidding" is, it is not unheard of for the Capitol to force past victors into prostitution.

They own tributes in all senses of the word.

As of November 2014, bidding is no longer something happening commonly IC. Tributes can notice the sharp decline. OOC, if you have a plot you want to run that involves bidding, please PM the mods to arrange it Bidding should never be sprung on other players without their consent and going forward it will be considered a strike-worthy offense to spring the topic on other players without their permission. Characters under the age of 18 may no longer participate in bidding, even if the bidding is non-sexual in nature.

What do mentors do (other than tell tributes to stay alive)?

Well, helping your character stay alive is what it boils down to. They will help you train. They will work out strategies to get you more sponsors in and out of the arena by manipulating your actions and publicity. They work directly with you and your stylist team as much as possible to make people want you to win.

A lot of this will be hand-waved if your mentors are currently NPCs. The sponsor/credit system is based on activity, but you are free to NPC your mentor as being incompetent. Mentors are primarily former victors, and many of them are not in the best shape, mentally and/or physically.

However, make sure you and players with character who are your teammates are all on the same page. It wouldn't make sense for your to have your character always decrying your mentor team, when everyone else is singing their praise (Unless your character is a jackass and the mentors have left them to fend for themselves, in which case, the odds probably aren't in your favor. And you might want to start kissing up.)

What is the benefit of getting a weapon in the Arena? (Other than to kill people with?)

The biggest benefit is food. There will be animals in the arena, and often they will be you biggest, and possibly only source of food.

Beyond food, it would depend on the weapons. Blunt objects used to break open nuts, weapons used to help you climb. Ingenuity is you friend in the arena.

Will there be interviews before the game? The parades?

Things like the interviews and parades won't be happening every arena, but can occur for plot purposes.

What if I want to app someone like Percy Jackson who would fit perfectly to be from District 4 - can I request this?

You can created Hunger Game specific AUs. See the post on who you can app for exact rules.

What does the winner of the Games get?

The winner of the games receives the option to no longer continue the cycle and be free of the games, and the vague promise that, if the Capitol ever finds a way to reverse the process by which they bring people here, the winner can utilize it. They can permanently opt out.

Of course if you want them back in, the Capitol can always find an IC reasons to put them back in. Just discuss it with a mod.

How long do the games last?

Each arena's cycle will last no longer than 2 months, however we will adjust the length in response to IC events. If everyone dies in the first week, for example. The arena is then followed by several week in the Capitol.

How do I know who else has been assigned to my character's District?

All characters, on the Taken Character list, have their District posted, along with their rank. There is also the District Association Post, which lists all characters by their [assigned] district.

My character has a small item of power, can they keep it?

All objects will be confiscated when the character arrives. A few days later it will be "returned" to the character, however they are free to realize (possibly the hard way) that this is just a well made replica. Small, non-weapons like objects can be taken in as tokens, subject to the Capitol's discretion.

Wait, is that a Stargate reference?!
    ...maybe a little.

Potential apper here with a question

[personal profile] windyellow 2013-11-04 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm thinking up of a couple of characters to app here, and I have two questions about apping them.

First is about this guy: Dustin Brooks from Power Rangers Ninja Storm fame. Now I'm assuming Dustin won't have his morpher, but how would his out of Ranger suit powers be allowed in the game? He can fire yellow energy from his hands, (which will likely be nerfed) travel at super fast speed via traveling across land, and travels underground briefly. Now how would this be nerfed so not to give an unfair advantage to himself?

A general question is how would a character be forced into killing someone should they not cooperate? I can't see Dustin or Zoey (my other prospective character) going along with killing people. That brings me to my other question. If a character were to have a companion in canon, do they have said companion in the Games? Examples would be anyone from Digimon or Pokemon.

How would you guys take applications from series that are completed in their country of origin but only partially translated so far? The translation is extremely slow and it's likely to be a year or more until it's fully translated, so I wonder if it might be seen as something close to an ongoing canon.

sa, lost my second question

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Additionally, just to clarify-can abilities that are not the result of alien/divine/inhuman powers but rather years of hard work and practice be abilities that can be kept? Sorry if it's been asked before in so many variants.

Hey!

The character I'm apping would speak Arabic/Syrian circa 1191. In game, it's translated through the Animus his ancestor is using.

Though he does speak to several English/French/German speakers in game, it's never explained if it's them knowing his language or something to do with the Animus. My headcanon would be that he probably doesn't know much English.

Would the game translate everyone for him/him for everyone? Would the Capitol know what he was saying if he was speaking his original language, since it's an outdated version? For encryption and such.

Hey, I can't find something like this anywhere... I know powers are often limited or kept only to certain arenas, but what about magics summoned with tomes or grimoires? Technically the caster is summoning the magic through the book instead of from themselves (and often are only classed as mages, etc, because of their talent with magic and not that they themselves are magical,) would those sort of "weapons" be available in any arena? Or would they be limited too, like "natural" magic?

Question! With the 75th Quell-that-Never-Ends, what actually happens out in the Districts when there are winners? How slowed down is production? Are they required to watch all of the Games, like previously, or are highlights mainly what's pushed through to the public televisions and displays?

Mostly I wanted to know if there's any benefit someone in the Districts would see from having someone "assigned" to their District win the games. Particularly with the Games now running so soon one after another, is there any notable benefit? What exactly does winning do for a person (or their district) other than shift them into position as a Mentor?

Hey mods. I have a hair-brained thought of apping in Ezio here as a Capitol AU and wanted to know a couple of things. Could he still be an Assassin of some stripe, and if so, could he have an Assassin Brotherhood in Panem? He'd have a serious front as an everyday Capitol citizen vintner and restaurateur, perhaps? and the brotherhood itself would be like a small secret society with less of a focus on rudely shanking folks and more into intelligence gathering and quiet espionage.

If that doesn't work, I can totally work within whatever parameters you guys want to hit me with, this is just me sussing stuff out in an excited fervor. c:

Hi! I'm in the process of building a potential OC victor from a previous Games, but I'm having trouble finding which of the Games are already spoken for, other than a canon list. The District Associations page doesn't elaborate.

Are there any games, say in the 60th-73rd range that are NOT spoken for victor-wise apart from the canon ones?

Does that even make any sense at all whatsoever?

So, if there's a character I wanted to app who's a hologram, how would that be handled? It's the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, and in canon he has a mobile emitter that lets him move around freely.

Basically I want to avoid "oh no i am human now how does i bodily function", so what I was thinking was keeping him a hologram, but having him locked as solid (so no phasing through things).

Damage taken in the arena (cuts and stabs and things) would show up and couldn't be fixed (like if he lost an arm, he can't unlose it), and while he wouldn't be able to be "killed" just by stabbing his hologram, destroying the mobile emitter would "kill" him.

If this (or a variation on this) isn't workable, I totally understand.

A few people have asked questions about language here so I know written language doesn't get translated. But what I'm currently wondering is that, if a character can't read English (which I'm assuming is the main language in Panem?), would they be able to have the communicator thingy read out texts for them? Or would they not be able to read any network texts at all until they learned the language?

I hate to ask this because it feels like I need a ridiculously detailed answer, but is there any way for me to find out what types of screens (tv screen, hologram, projector, other?) are used in different parts of the Training Center, different parts of the Capitol, and in each arena he'll be in? Because depending on the type Roland will or won't be able to see what's on them.

So, I have a question. I have a character I'm thinking of apping as a tribute, who's blind in canon. In canon, this isn't a problem, since his powers allow him to make do fairly well, but since he won't have them in the game...

Would it be ok to assume that the Capitol simply healed him/gave him prosthetic eyes that would let him see? He wasn't always blind, so I could certainly app him from before his eyes were hurt, but I just wanted to know what are the rules for these situations in the game.

I have a question about credits. It says on the credits page:

•10+ COMMENT STRING || +5 Credits || A thread consisting of 10 or more comments between two characters - approximately 5 each.

So if you have a thread with more than two characters in, can you get any of the 10/50/100 comment credits and if so, how would you calculate when you get them?

Similar to the above question about the blind character, I was wondering if it would be possible to allow a character with enhanced senses to keep that ability. To elaborate, this character is completely blind but his other senses are enhanced so as to give him an extrasensory "radar" which allows him to navigate the world more or less normally. Would it be acceptable for him to somehow keep his other enhanced senses while allowing him to remain visually blind?

Hello! A potential apper here.

I hope this is right place to ask this; your rules states that it's forbidden for character under age 16 to have sex (which is understandable!) The character who I'm considering apping is 14-15 and very promiscuous in canon and likes to pay for different kind of goods/favors with sex. So, I was wondering if it's acceptable for character under 16 to hit on others even if it wouldn't lead to anywhere. Also, if it's okay for there to be some slight sexual content (like kissing and touching, without sex ofc.)

OK, I'm sorry because I know I've had this explained to me before but I need a refresher.

So On Activity Check points there's the sections listed:

"REPLYING TO A THREAD || +10 Credits || Replying to any top-level comment thread posted by another character in a group log. "

Can we elaborate on this a bit? What constitutes a Top-level comment thread? Is a group log something another character creates or something a mod posts like the cornucopia?

For the last few AC's I've just been ignoring it because I didn't understand it but I feel like I'm losing points I could be using.

Apologies if this is stated elsewhere and I missed it.

How much does the Capitol / the Gamemakers know about the Tributes they recruit? For instance, let's say I app Bruce Wayne.

Obviously, he'd want to keep his alter ego a secret - especially since there's a member of his Rogues Gallery in the game.

However, he'd get a lot more attention if the Capitol knew and marketed him as Batman, the Dark Knight, rather than Bruce Wayne, playboy billionaire.

I've noticed several people with questions about language, but the answers don't seem completely consistent except that written languages are not translated.

My question is both in general (there should probably be something up in the FAQ itself) and specifically as pertains to this thread.

In the Mass Effect universe, basically nobody is speaking the same language. Like, it's all in English for convenience, but every now and then it makes mention of translators which are generally, near as I can tell, implants. So for Shepard, Garrus might be speaking a Palaven dialect and Thane some form of Citadel standard or Drell language, and she hears it all translated in realtime, inflections and vocal qualities preserved. The limitations of reality are such that this technology might as well be magic.

So my question is, is her translator still active, and if it's not, how does the Capitol handle face-to-face and/or network interactions with people who might not speak any language before heard in the Capitol?

(1) SEX!!!! Now that that's out there, what are the in-universe contraceptives and what about STDs? Do they exist? How prominent are they? Is there treatment for them, etc? NOT THAT I THINK IT WILL EVER COME UP, BUT NAT WILL BE SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THEM [face in hands I'm sorry]

(2) When Tributes are given their tracking devices, are they awake during this time? More importantly, is it possible to remove them if they choose to take that route?

(3) Is it possible for someone to find out ICly what has happened in the previous games through reading or recorded materials?

Hi!

My friend is apping the same character he brought in for the family event. I was wondering if it would be possible for that character to remember his time in the Capitol during the event? My friend is taking him from the same canon point as well to make things easier, so it would be wonderful if the character could remember being there for the event- that way, we don't have to play out the same sort of threads we've already played out.
