But, outside of suiting her up in a spankin' new outfit, it also grants her a weapon -- a spear (which changes size and extends, etc) -- the ability to summon an infinite (?) amount of spears of different sizes, create barriers, and she has the ability to create illusions (basically, doppelgangers; but she's repressed this ability). The soul gem has to be within 100 meters of her person or her body's as good as a corpse.
It's both an item she needs to survive and an item that physically gives her powers, but it does have its cost. I mentioned above that she needs to clean it from any impurity after using any type of magic because, for one, it's her soul in there and because if she doesn't, the gem corrodes and she'll turn into a witch, which is a type of monster in her universe. And, really, the only way to clean it is by using a grief seed which can only be obtained from a witch.
